Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Pay Attention

As one of my teachers in days of yore used to say, “Caron, it’s time for you to pay attention!”, and that has never been more true than now. It appears as though big changes could be coming to our freshwater fishing regulations and seasons in New Hampshire as soon as next year, and we, as the fly fishing / angling community (anglers, guides, and businesses that rely on visitors to our state) need to unite and pay attention as the plans are detailed in two public meetings next week.

Back To School

No, this post doesn’t deal with an underrated Rodney Dangerfield movie from the 1980’s, or my personal favorite time of the year (when the kids go back to class, ha ha!), it’s about our recently concluded Fly Fishing School at Tall Timber, put on by Northern Water Guide last weekend. Nick Proulx of NWG was the instructor for the school, and he had a good class of four students that were eager to start their journey in the world of fly fishing.

This? Again!

Mother Nature unfortunately decided to rear her ugly head once again this summer, as we received the remnants of tropical storm Beryl a couple of nights ago. It dumped close to five inches of rain in our part of northern New Hampshire, nearly all of which fell over night on Wednesday.

Strange Days

That’s a great rainbow trout that our guest is holding, taken during hex hatch action a few nights ago on Back Lake. Good news is that there are trout out there like this, rising (occasionally) to big ole hex patterns. Bad news is that this has been the exception and not the rule this year.

Heating Up

The hot and humid weather has hit us, even up here in northern New Hampshire, for a three day stretch. While there were certainly more hexes coming off of Back Lake last night, the hot weather may also have had another consequence – warming up the surface temp of the lake to a toasty 72 degrees.

Back Lake Hex Hatch Update: 6/17

An interesting night on Back Lake last night, as Hexagenia made their appearance, albeit very late in the evening. We didn’t start noticing the behemoths truly coming off until around 9 PM, but then it was game on for as long as you could see.
